Since 2018, May 5th has been National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in the US in order to raise concern for the crisis.

On June 3, 2019 The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls formally released its final report, including 231 Calls for Justice; concluding that Canada’s treatment of cases has amounted to a genocide. 

Today, across Turtle Island we take a moment to reflect on our shared history, the ongoing injustice within current Canadian society and the heightened risk of violence against women COVID-19 poses. 

VATJSS supports the 231 Calls for Justice directed at governments, institutions, social service providers, industries and all Canadians. These calls center on a decolonizing approach, cultural safety and self-determined and Indigenous-led solutions and services. We support the families and communities healing and the family members, survivors of violence, and Knowledge Keepers who came together to tell these truths.
